Module MGEO116 Concepts of Regional Tectonics, module part Regional Geology

In the module part "Regional Geology" we seek to convey a deeper understanding of the structure and the geological development of larger regions. It consists of a seminar and an excursion. We explain basic geological concepts (e.g. basin and ocean formation, mountain building, formation of deposits, hazard scenarios) using various examples and placing particular emphasis on tectonic processes.

In the summer term 2025, the topic of this module part will be "Selected Alpine Faults from top to bottom". In the seminar, selected large fault zones of the Alps will be examined in more detail with regard to their formation. During the excursion, faults with different kinematics (strike-slip, thrusting and normal faulting) will be investigated in the field. The erosion level in the Alps enables the observation of different structural levels of faults.
